Akchour Waterfalls and God's Bridge: Hiking Guide from Chefchaouen

By Fes Morocco Tours team 4 min read

A practical hiking guide to the Akchour waterfalls and God's Bridge in the Rif Mountains near Chefchaouen, with trail options, walking times, tips and the best season to go.

Just outside Chefchaouen, the Rif Mountains hide one of the most beautiful natural areas in northern Morocco: Akchour. Clear turquoise rivers, deep gorges, waterfalls and a spectacular natural rock arch called God's Bridge make it a favourite escape for hikers and nature lovers.

This guide explains the main trails, how difficult they are, what to bring and how to plan your visit.

Where Is Akchour?

Akchour is located in the Talassemtane National Park area of the Rif Mountains, about 30 kilometres from Chefchaouen. The drive takes around 45 minutes to one hour. The trails start near a small dam and a group of cafés where the road ends.

If you are planning a trip to the Blue City, read our 3-day Fes to Chefchaouen itinerary, which includes a day in Akchour.

The Main Trails

From the starting point, the path splits into two main directions.

1. The Small Waterfall

  • Time: around 45 minutes to 1 hour each way.
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate.
  • Highlights: river views, small pools and a pretty waterfall.

This is the most popular option for families and casual walkers. The path follows the river, with some rocky sections and small climbs.

2. The Big Waterfall

  • Time: around 2 to 3 hours each way from the start.
  • Difficulty: moderate to challenging.
  • Highlights: deeper gorge scenery and a tall waterfall at the end.

The trail continues beyond the small waterfall. It includes steeper sections, river crossings and uneven ground. Plan a full day.

3. God's Bridge (Pont de Dieu)

  • Time: around 1 to 1.5 hours each way.
  • Difficulty: moderate.
  • Highlights: a huge natural rock arch above the river.

This trail goes in the other direction from the start. You can walk up to a viewpoint above the arch or, in some seasons, continue down near the river below it.

Which Trail Should You Choose?

  • Half-day, easy: small waterfall.
  • Half-day, scenic: God's Bridge.
  • Full day, active: small waterfall plus God's Bridge, or the big waterfall.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April to June) is ideal: the rivers are full, the nature is green and temperatures are pleasant. Summer is popular for swimming in the cold pools, but it can be busy, especially at weekends. Autumn is quiet and comfortable. In winter and after heavy rain, rivers can be high and some crossings unsafe, so always ask locally.

What to Bring

  • Hiking shoes with good grip, or sandals that can get wet.
  • Water and snacks, although small cafés exist along the trails.
  • Sun cream, hat and sunglasses.
  • Swimwear and a small towel in summer.
  • A light jacket in spring and autumn.
  • Cash for cafés and parking.

Safety Tips

  • Start early to avoid the midday heat and the crowds.
  • Do not jump into pools without checking the depth.
  • Be careful on wet rocks, which can be very slippery.
  • Do not attempt river crossings when the water is high or fast.
  • A local guide is recommended for the big waterfall and longer routes.

How to Get to Akchour

The easiest way is a private transfer or tour from Chefchaouen. Shared grand taxis also run from Chefchaouen, but return times can be less predictable. Driving yourself is possible, but the mountain road is narrow and winding.
